OpenAI Expands to Norway with Renewable Energy-Powered Data Center
Sam Altman's OpenAI is making a strategic MOVE into Europe with the construction of a new data center in Norway. The Stargate project, a collaboration with Nscale Global Holdings Ltd. and Aker ASA, will feature a 230MW facility powered entirely by renewable hydroelectric energy. Located in Narvik, Northern Norway, the site was chosen for its seclusion, low-cost power, and favorable climate.
NVIDIA Europe announced its partnership in the venture, highlighting the creation of a high-uptime AI task hub. The data center will also collaborate with local academic institutions, blending infrastructure with research capabilities. Plans include scaling to an additional 290MW, potentially supporting up to 100,000 GPU clusters.
While Europe trails in consumer AI adoption, this project signals strong institutional commitment to infrastructure development. The initiative leverages Norway's abundant renewable resources, positioning it as a key player in sovereign AI workloads.
